Dr. Harvey H. Millar P.Eng.
Harvey Millar is a Saint Lucian-Canadian national. In 1982, Dr. Millar completed a Bachelors degree (with Upper Second Class Honors) in Industrial Engineering at University of the West Indies St. Augustine. He earned a Masters of Applied Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1985 and 1990 respectively.
Dr. Millar, who joined Saint Mary’s University in 1988, is a tenured full Professor in the Sobey School of Business and teaches courses in Operations Management and Business Statistics. He has published several articles in a variety academic journals including: The European Journal of Operational Research, Fisheries Research, and the Journal of the Operational Research Society. His research interests are varied and include among others: manufacturing strategy, purchasing and supply chain management, and production management. He has presented his research at over 35 international conferences.
In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Millar is the President of Management Technologies, a consulting firm dedicated to helping public and private sector organizations run efficient, effective and profitable operations through the application of scientific management practices. He has done work for the Government of the British Virgin Islands, The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, TYE in Trinidad, UWI, and several businesses in Saint Lucia and Canada.
Dr. Millar is also a workshop trainer, a strategic planning facilitator, as well as a freelance columnist on business, education and cultural issues. His more than 60 articles have appeared in the Saint Lucia Mirror, The Star, The Voice, Business Focus, The Black to Business Newsletter, The CARICAD Newsletter, and the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association Newsletter.
Dr. Millar’s academic achievements are balanced by artistic pursuits. He has been a jazz musician and composer for more than 30 years. He is a 5-time music award winner. He won two East Coast Music Awards in 2002 and 2003, and three (2) African Nova Scotian Music awards in 2002 for his debut CD Milestones. Dr. Millar is currently working on his second CD Lux Life which will be released later this year.
Since arriving in Canada, Dr. Millar has had a strong affiliation with the African Nova Scotian Community serving on several Boards and Committees too numerous to mention. He is a founding member of the African Canadian Education Project, an influential community-based advocacy group whose mission is improving the academic achievement of African Canadian learners between 7 - 15 years.
