Dr. Simms’ outstanding contribution to Canadian society was recognized by many awards. These include the Black Achievement Award for contributions to Public Policy, the Inter-Amicus Human Rights Awards from McGill University and the Citation for Citizenship from the Canadian Government.
A renowned lecturer, Dr. Simms has been a guest speaker/lecturer on numerous occasions in a number of countries since 1981. She was the 1997 Henrietta Harvey Distinguished Lecturer at Memorial University (Newfoundland) and the 2001 Norman Washington Manley Lecturer at the University of the West Indies.
As an author of numerous publications, researcher and project leader, she has also spearheaded video productions and sustainable income generating projects at the level of the community.
A gender specialist, advisor to governments, developmental psychologist, educator, researcher, social policy negotiator, writer and public speaker Dr. Simms has developed expertise in race relations, human development, gender issues, community empowerment and issues that impact on women and minorities.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
MANAGEMENT
Advisor to the Government of Jamaica on Poverty Eradication, Gender Issues and Child Labour.
Advisor to the Canadian Government on Women’s Issues for five years as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Administration of large budgets both in Canada and Jamaica.
Managed a staff of 44 including senior managers.
Directed the development of strategies to implement policies, programmes and research projects in Canada, Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Negotiated funding agreements between government departments, communities, universities and international funding agencies.
Designed, administered and evaluated contracts with individuals and institutions.
Developed and evaluated curriculum, training and income generating programmes.
ADVISORY AND LEADERSHIPROLE
Demonstrated leadership in working with a government-appointed Board.
Advisor to the Government of Jamaica and Canada on Women’s Issues, poverty eradication, race relations, education, child labour and issues of development.
